Charlie Puth and Jungkook’s “Left and Right”: Lyrics, Meaning

After dropping countless cryptic hints, which have spurred several fan theories, Charlie Puth’s long-awaited collab with BTS’s Jungkook, “Left And Right,” is finally here! Released on June 24, the mellow pop track perfectly combines the “Light Switch” singer’s signature falsetto with the K-pop superstar’s suave vocals. Written and produced by Puth, the mid-tempo track marks the second collaboration between the two artists, who set the stage on fire with their powerful performance of “We Don’t Talk Anymore” at the MBC Plus X Genie Music Awards in 2018. The breezy summer air is set to appear on the “That’s Hilarious” singer’s upcoming third self-titled studio album, “Charlie.”

The lyrics of “Left And Right” by Charlie Puth and Jungkook

Although the BTS singer features on “Left And Right,” the track is sung entirely in English, with the lyrics reading as follows:

CHORUS (Charlie Puth)
Memories follow me left and right
I can feel you here, I can feel you here
You occupy every corner of my mind
(What are you gonna do now?)

VERSE 1 (Puth)
Since the-the day you-you left
(No, I don’t know how)
How to erase your body from my brain
(What are you gonna do now?)
Maybe I should just focus on me instead
(But all I think about)
Are the nights we were tangled in your bed

PRE-CHORUS (Puth)
Oh, no (Oh, no)
Oh, no (Oh, no)
you turn in circles
You’re stuck in my head, yeah

CHORUS (Puth)
Memories follow me left and right
I can feel you here, I can feel you here
You occupy every corner of my mind
Your love stays with me day and night
I can feel you here, I can feel you here
You occupy every corner of my mind
What are you gonna do now?

VERSE 2 (Jungkook)
Since the-the day you left
(Someone tell me how)
How much more should I drink for the pain?
(What are you gonna do now?)
You do things to me that I can’t forget
(Now all I think about)
Are the nights we were tangled in your bed

PRE-CHORUS (Jungkook, Puth)
Oh, no (Oh, no)
Oh, no (Oh, no)
you turn in circles
You’re stuck in my head, yeah

CHORUS (Jungkook)
Memories follow me left and right
I can feel you here, I can feel you here
You occupy every corner of my mind (of my mind)
Your love stays with me day and night
I can feel you here, I can feel you here
You occupy every corner of my mind
What are you gonna do now?

BRIDGE (Puth)
Did you know it was you who ran away?
And even now, baby, I’m still not okay
Did you know that my dreams, they are all the same?
Every time I close my eyes

CHORUS (Puth, Jungkook)
Memories follow me left and right
I can feel you here, I can feel you here
You occupy every corner of my mind (What you gon’ do now?)
Your love stays with me day and night
I can feel you here, I can feel you here
You occupy every corner of my mind (What you gon’ do now?)

OUTRO (Puth, Jungkook)
I can feel you here, I can feel you here
You occupy every corner of my mind (What you gon’ do now?)

What do the lyrics of “Left And Right” by Charlie Puth & Jungkook mean?

The track sees Puth and Jungkook reminiscing about their previous relationships as they still find themselves wrapped up in the warm memories of what had been. Although they recognize that the relationship is over and over, the good memories involuntarily seep into their minds, replaying on a loop, much to their chagrin. “Memories follow me left and right / I can feel you here, I can feel you here / You occupy every corner of my mind,” the couple recounts their dilemma in the bloated chorus. The hook uses the audio panning technique as it bounces the stack of harmonies in “I Can Feel You Here” from the left speaker to the right side – a nice touch to highlight the literal meaning of the words in the chorus.

Over percussive guitar strings, Puth and Jungkook recount different stages of a post-breakup narrative in two verses. While Puth can’t shake the intimate moments spent with his ex, Jungkook sings about hijacking the memories by drinking in the pain. “Did you know you’re the one that got away? / And even now, baby, I’m still not well,” Puth walks off onto the bridge, addressing “the one that got away” .

Meaning of Charlie Puth and Jungkook’s “Left And Right” Music Video

In the accompanying music video, Puth’s character appoints a “Love Doctor” in the style of a therapist who overhears everything he says about his former partner. While the expensive session seemed to heal her broken heart, we still see the two singers reeling from the breakup in their own cheeky ways. In one scene, Jungkook, perched on the hood of the car being driven by Puth, is thrown from the vehicle as Puth zigzags the steering wheel.

In the penultimate moments, Puth is visibly shocked to see Jungkook appear out of nowhere during one of his one-on-one sessions with the heartache specialist. This moment, along with Jungkook appearing on the hood of Puth’s car, led fans to believe that Jungkook is, in fact, the person who occupies every corner of Puth’s mind. And, honestly, who can blame him?
